'''Anime''' is a Japanese term, taken from the english word animation and refers to any animated show or movie produced in Japan, but has also become associated with a particular style that can as well be attributed to games, ect.  It is often considered a genre of entertainment, but should more properly be considered medium.  Anime covers a vast range of topics, from romance to horror, from comedy to action.  Anime can be about fantasy worlds, science fiction, gothic horror, as well as less common subjects in the west such as sports or cookery and is made for many different age groups.
