Titles
The Japanese often add titles to the end of names according to social status and/or level of intimacy. It is an error, however, to use a title after one's own name, a rule that anime fans often ignore.

|
The most common title. Used with acquaintances and in formal settings. Equivalent to Mr. or Ms. in English.

| -Chan
|
Familiar. Used mostly with young females, or - if the speaker is female - with a close peer. Sometimes mispronounced as -Tan by young children.

| -Kun
|
The male equivalent of -Chan.
|
| -Sama
|
Reverent. Used with people the speaker greatly respects or admires.

Used with teachers, doctors, or people with other advanced knowledge.
