Manga are illustrated stories with dynamic layouts, heavy use of tones, cinematic pacing, and strong emphasis on character development. Though manga has it's true origins in 19th and 20th century European and Americal political cartoons, the unique flavor comes from thier culture. In Midieval Japan a similar form of entertainment was derived, but it was not for mass consumption, on the other hand the modern manga is more closely related to the woodblock kibyôshi (Multi-volume kibyôshi were known as gôkan.) of teh late 18th century. These were produced for adults and covered topics including humor, fantasy, drama and even pornography. Government censorship and moving picture technology all but eliminated this art form, but there are clear parallels between it and modern manga. Proponents of manga point out that the stories and characters are more believable and "human" than North Aamerican and European comic books depict. "Also, I thought the potential of manga was more than getting a laugh; using themes of tears and sorrow, anger and hatred, I made stories that didn't always have happy endings." ~ Osamu Tezuka the god of manga
