Though manga has it's true origins in 19th and 20th century European and Americal political cartoons, the unique flavor comes from thier culture. In Midieval Japan a similar form of entertainment was derived, but it was not for mass consumption, on the other hand the modern manga is more closely related to the woodblock kibyôshi (Multi-volume kibyôshi were known as gôkan.) of teh late 18th century. These were produced for adults and covered topics including humor, fantasy, drama and even pornography. Government censorship and moving picture technology all but eliminated this art form, but there are clear parallels between it and modern manga.
